Virgin Media O2 Announces 3G Shutdown and Expands Data Poverty Initiative

Starting in April 2025, Virgin Media O2 will commence a phased shutdown of its 3G network, beginning in Durham. This initiative is designed to repurpose spectrum and infrastructure to bolster the performance of its 4G and 5G networks, catering to the growing demand for faster and more reliable mobile connectivity.
Customers with older devices that lack 4G or 5G capabilities may experience disruptions to their mobile data services but will still be able to make calls and send texts through the legacy 2G network. Virgin Media O2 is taking proactive measures to ensure a smooth transition, including reaching out to affected customers with options for free or discounted 4G-ready devices.
“As we prepare for the future of mobile connectivity, our priority is to ensure that all customers can continue to stay connected,” a Virgin Media O2 spokesperson said.
National Databank Expansion to Fight Data Poverty
In a bid to address the ongoing issue of data poverty, Virgin Media O2 has announced the expansion of its National Databank initiative to 70 additional O2 stores across the UK. This program provides eligible individuals with free mobile data, texts, and calls to help them stay connected and access essential services. Recipients can receive up to 25GB of free O2 data each month for a year.
The National Databank, described as a “food bank for connectivity” by the company, is aimed at supporting those struggling to pay their bills, particularly during challenging economic times.
“Connectivity is a lifeline in today’s world, and no one should be left without access due to financial difficulties,” the company emphasized in a recent statement.
Impact of Price Hikes Amid Regulatory Changes
While Virgin Media O2 is taking strides to support connectivity, the company’s customers, along with millions of others across the UK, are likely to face price increases of up to 15% in 2025. These hikes follow new Ofcom regulations intended to simplify mid-contract price adjustments.
Experts advise consumers to carefully review their usage patterns, compare available deals, and negotiate with their providers when contracts come up for renewal to mitigate the impact of these price changes.
